Landscaping Equipment Rental in Metro Detroit
Moving 10 yards of topsoil or a pile of mulch by wheelbarrow is a full weekend. With a mini skid steer it's an afternoon. C&W Equipment Rentals rents landscaping equipment to homeowners, crews and landscaping companies across Metro Detroit, starting at $100 a day. Our co-owner Arnett Chisholm has spent about a decade running landscape crews in Southeast Michigan, so we'll help you pick the right machine for the job.
Which machine for which landscaping job
| Job | Best machine | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Spreading topsoil, mulch or gravel | AGT YSRT14 or Ditch Witch SK800 mini skid steer with bucket | Carries a bucket-load per trip and fits through gates |
| Moving pallets of sod, stone or block | Ditch Witch SK800 with pallet forks ($50/day) | Lifts pallets straight off the delivery truck |
| Removing shrubs, old beds and roots | CFG H13R mini excavator or skid steer with grapple | Pulls root balls a shovel can't |
| Bed edging, tree holes, small trenches | CFG H13R mini excavator | Precise digging with a narrow bucket |
| Hauling debris or bringing in material | PJ 7x14 dump trailer | Dumps at the site or the yard, no hand unloading |
How a typical landscape install goes
- Clear out the old: pull shrubs, sod and roots with the grapple or mini excavator, and load it straight into the dump trailer.
- Rough grade: use the skid steer bucket to shape beds and slope soil away from the house.
- Bring in material: topsoil, mulch, river rock or gravel, moved a bucket at a time instead of a wheelbarrow at a time.
- Finish grade and plant: back-drag with the bucket for a smooth surface, then dig tree and shrub holes with the excavator.
- Clean up: haul the last of the debris and return the machine.
Built for Michigan yards
A lot of Oakland, Wayne and Macomb County yards sit on heavy clay that holds water and fights a shovel. Machines cut through it, and getting the grade right during a landscape job keeps water away from your foundation. Planning to dig deeper than a few inches? Landscaping equipment FAQ
What equipment do I need to rent for landscaping?
For most yard projects, a mini skid steer moves soil, mulch and stone, a mini excavator handles digging and root removal, and a dump trailer hauls debris. Many jobs only need the skid steer.
Can a homeowner run a mini skid steer?
Yes. Mini skid steers are stand-on machines with simple controls. We show you how at pickup or delivery, and most first-time renters are comfortable within 15 minutes.
Will a mini skid steer damage my lawn?
Tracked mini skid steers spread their weight and are much easier on grass than a full-size machine. Avoid sharp turns on wet lawns and most marks recover in a week or two.
How much does it cost to rent landscaping equipment?
Mini skid steers are $100 to $300/day, the mini excavator is $200/day, and the dump trailer is $100/day with a 3-day minimum. Buckets are free; grapples and forks are $50/day.
