Hardscaping & Paver Equipment Rental in Metro Detroit

Most of a paver patio is digging and hauling. Before a single paver goes down you're removing 6 to 9 inches of soil and bringing in tons of base stone. C&W Equipment Rentals rents the machines that do the heavy part, for homeowners and hardscaping crews across Metro Detroit.

How a paver patio goes with rented equipment

  1. Call MISS DIG 811 at least 3 business days before digging.
  2. Mark and excavate: dig 6 to 9 inches for a patio or walkway (deeper for driveways), sloping about 1/4 inch per foot away from the house.
  3. Haul spoils: load excavated soil straight into the dump trailer.
  4. Install base: spread compacted gravel base in lifts, then a 1 inch sand setting bed.
  5. Move pavers with forks: set pallets next to the work area so nobody carries block across the yard.
  6. Lay, edge and finish.

Retaining walls

A segmental block wall needs a level trench for the base course, a compacted gravel base, and usually a perforated drain pipe behind it. A mini excavator digs the trench and backfills behind the wall, and a skid steer with forks moves the block. Walls over about 3 to 4 feet usually need an engineered design and may need a permit, so check with your city first.

Hardscaping equipment FAQ

What equipment do I need to install a paver patio?

A mini skid steer to dig and spread base, pallet forks to move pavers, and a dump trailer to haul soil and gravel. You'll also want a plate compactor for the base.

How deep do I dig for a paver patio?

Most patios and walkways need 6 to 9 inches of excavation for gravel base, sand and the paver itself. Driveways that carry cars need more.

Do you rent pallet forks?

Yes. Pallet forks are $50/day on our mini skid steers. Buckets are always free.

Do you rent plate compactors?

Not at this time. Most local rental and hardware stores carry them by the day.
