How to remove a stump with a mini excavator
- Call MISS DIG 811 at least 3 business days ahead. Roots often wrap around buried lines.
- Cut the stump low but leave a foot or two above ground for leverage.
- Dig a trench around it to expose and cut the main roots.
- Pry it out: get the bucket under the root ball and lift, working around the stump.
- Fill and level the hole with the bucket.
Very large or old stumps can be more than a small excavator can pull. For those, grinding is usually the better choice. We don't rent stump grinders, but they're available from most hardware rental stores.
Before you clear
Some Metro Detroit cities protect trees above a certain size or restrict clearing near wetlands and streams. Check with your city before removing large trees or clearing more than a yard's worth.

Free delivery and pickup within 10 miles, then $5 per mile. We serve all of Metro Detroit, including Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties, plus Ann Arbor, Brighton and Howell. Open 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday, 7am to 2pm Sunday.

Yes. Our grapple attachment is $50/day on the mini skid steer and is ideal for brush, logs and debris.
Where do I dispose of brush and stumps?
Many Metro Detroit communities and private yard waste sites accept brush, logs and stumps. Haul it in our dump trailer and dump it in one go.
