Putting in a new fence or tearing out an old one? C&W Equipment Rentals rents the machines that take the heavy work off your back: a mini excavator to dig post holes and pull old posts, a mini skid steer with pallet forks to move materials, and a dump trailer to haul it all away. Serving all of Metro Detroit.
Which machine for which fence job
| Job | Best machine | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Digging post holes in clay | CFG H13R mini excavator | Digs through heavy clay and roots that stop a hand digger |
| Pulling old posts and concrete footings | CFG H13R mini excavator | Lifts posts and concrete plugs straight out |
| Moving posts, panels, pickets and concrete bags | Ditch Witch SK800 with pallet forks ($50/day) | Moves full pallets across the yard to each post line |
| Clearing brush along the fence line | Ditch Witch SK800 with grapple ($50/day) | Grabs brush, vines and debris in big bites |
| Hauling old fence, concrete and spoils | PJ 7x14 dump trailer | Dumps at the transfer station, no hand unloading |
We don't rent auger attachments right now. For a long run of identical holes, some renters pair our mini excavator with a hand-held auger from a hardware rental store.
How a fence job goes
- Call MISS DIG 811 at least 3 business days before you dig. It's free and required in Michigan.
- Confirm your property line and city fence rules, including height limits and permits.
- Tear out the old fence: pull posts and concrete with the mini excavator and load everything into the dump trailer.
- Mark and dig post holes, usually 6 to 8 feet apart. In Southeast Michigan, set posts at least 36 inches deep, and 42 inches for gate and corner posts so they don't heave in winter.
- Move materials with the skid steer instead of carrying them across the yard.
- Set posts in concrete or gravel, then haul away spoils and debris.

Fence installation FAQ
What equipment do I need to install a fence?
A mini excavator for post holes and old post removal, a mini skid steer with forks to move materials, and a dump trailer to haul debris.
How deep should fence posts be in Michigan?
At least 36 inches, or one third of the post's length. Gate and corner posts should go 42 inches deep to get below the frost line.
Do you rent an auger?
Not right now. Our mini excavator digs post holes, and hand-held augers are available from most hardware rental stores.
Can I take out my old fence with your equipment?
Yes. The mini excavator pulls old posts and concrete footings, and the dump trailer hauls it all away.
